*blows the dust off*
It's been a while since I sat in the blogger's seat. I'm pleased to find that it's still a comfortable fit.
Okay, so, it's the first day of a new year. Which means everyone is talking about resolutions.
Over the past few days I've found myself in a handful of situations that presented some pressure for people to share their resolutions for the new year. These were earnest moments of zeal and optimisim, the kind of starry-eyed hope that withers in the presence of cynicism. Which meant biting my tongue about how pointless most resolutions are. And also coming up with one.
So having reviewed resolutions past, I considered what works and what doesn't. I concluded that a resolution's success lies in its flexibility. And its rigidity. All right, let me explain.
Every day in 2014 I will do something that I'll thank myself for tomorrow. And I'll cover three categories:

So having reviewed resolutions past, I considered what works and what doesn't. I concluded that a resolution's success lies in its flexibility. And its rigidity. All right, let me explain.
Every day in 2014 I will do something that I'll thank myself for tomorrow. And I'll cover three categories:
- fiction (today's example: I played with description; had a word goal in mind, but focused more on testing different approaches and deleting nothing. Learning to get it right in fewer attempts. I also made a Goodreads list of books I hope to finish next year, which ties in pretty well with the whole "get better at writing" thing.)
- academic work (today's example: wove Latin literacy into week 3's lecture on Roman Britain. We'll be examining this curse tablet)
- health (today's example: swam, opted for a salad at lunch)
This year I will demand more of myself, but I will also be kind to myself. I will be forward-thinking in a way that is structured, but not impossible to maintain. Whatever your resolutions are for 2014, I wish you every success in clinging to them, white-knuckled, for as long as you can. May this year be your best yet.
